"More is More" on the Mantel

I have lamented on here before about decorating my massive mantel. It is on a focal wall in our living room. The living room is our least used room in the house and the last one to be decorated. Since the fireplace is the first thing you see when you walk in the house, I like for it to always look nice.I seem to always stray from my moderate mantra when decorating the mantel and instead use the idea that "more is more".

After I had taken about half of the pictures I remembered I had not turned on the fireplace chandies. I like how the flickering bulbs tie in with the giant gold frame...and this year Santa.

I'm usually a pretty simple person, but for the two Christmases we have been in this house, the mantel has tended more towards the "blingy" side. Last year I used red and silver and a "fire and ice" idea throughout the mantel. This year I brought in more golds to counter (and blend???) with the red and silver.

I bought the silver trees and wire reindeer at the Dollar General store probably 15 or more years ago. They were only a few dollars each.
I have no idea where I bought the Santa. My best guess is either Wal-Mart or Target...after Christmas. That is my usual method of operation. I got the giant red balls at K-Mart about ten years ago, and the silver balls are cheapola plastic that come in the big package. The red sequin shapes are all cheapo ornaments as well. The red "boingy" balls are from the floral section of the store and were bought after Christmas. I have used those things in the tree, in poinsettias, and as filler on shelves. This year they get to "boing" on the mantel.

Aren't the "boingers" great? I have them in red/green too on top of a hutch in the den

I have to use three strands of greenery on this massive mantel to make it look the least bit full. I have probably 300 lights on top and another strand that drapes the front. I try to make sure there are always lights positioned next to the sparkly items. Of course it helps that this all sits in front of a gianormous mirror as well!

The big chandy looks all sparkly and pretty both on and off when reflected with all the bling from this mantel.

There are dozens of trolleys that go by our house each night during the holiday season. In addition, there are walking tours that travel our neighborhood. Because of that I like to leave the big door to our living room open and have the glass storm door where gawkers sight-seers can catch a glimpse.

I hope that my "more is more" attitude on the mantel looks festive to all visitors.

I also hope that the "More is More Mantel" made with Wal-Mart, Target, KMart and Dollar General decorations just shows that things can be decorated on the cheap and still look nice.
Does Christmas ever bring out the "more is more" attitude in you?

Hanging of the Green (wreath)

From the moment I spotted the checkerboard tin at the salvage yard I knew I would put a live Christmas wreath in the middle of it. Plain. Simple. Beautiful. The checkerboard practically told me itself that during the Christmas season he wanted to be part of the 'hanging of the greens'!

So far there have only been a couple of friends that have totally understood why I love this (Purina) checkerboard tin so much. My family "uh-huh's" me and shakes their head up and down and tolerates my whim, but they haven't just LOVED it like I do.

That's ok with me though. It's not that they mind the checkerboard, they just don't understand my passion for it. Just like I don't understand their passion for TV. Or fantasy football. Or the same sports story watched over and over and over and over...(like they are seeing it for the first time. Every. Time!!) So we're even.

I tolerate their whims. They tolerate mine. And we all live happily. Especially that (Purina) checkerboard with the simple green wreath that it was practically screaming out for during the holiday season.

Never mind the wreath is a little wonky and not quite perfectly circular. More like a crooked ellipse.

A simple wonky ellipse held up by a strand of upholstery webbing that (almost) looks like it has two lines of checkerboard running along its edges.
(So much better than the "velvet" red ribbon it came with.)

When the Christmas season is over, the checkerboard can go back to looking wonderful as a sentry for the sofa. But until then....
The (Purina) checkerboard looks pretty magnificent with its simple wreath of greens. Do you have a simple decoration that just makes you happy every time you see it?

CHECK This Out!!

When I was putting out the Christmas decorations I noticed there was a similar theme running throughout each room: Some form of red check/plaid throw. I gathered them all up for a picture. Do you think I need a red check throw/blanket intervention?

By the way, the bottom red houndstooth blanket is new this year from Target. It is the sheepskin fleece stuff on the back. It is warm and cute. Win, win!!

Santa Sittin'

You've heard of baby-sitting I know.
Well I have a bad case of "Santa-sitting".

I Santa-sit for so many Clauses that I have to spread them throughout the house. On the hutch in our den are some of my very favorites. A very top Santa mug and the very small Santa mug are both vintage that I have had since I was a kid. A couple of the others are Dollar Tree mugs and I don't even remember the other one. When all mixed together you can't even tell the difference between any of them!

Last year I wrapped a bunch of cheapo used paperbacks in three different kinds of plaid gift wrapping. I used the plaid in my dining room here. This year I moved the books to the den. Plaid is throughout the house, but the books are on the hutch this year. In my house things are never the same from one Christmas to the next. Oh I use the same things every year, but I just mix them up every single year.....And of course add to the collection(s)!

My very good friend from Kansas sent me this new Santa this year. It is a stuffed ornament, but he looks very happy on the Santa shelves! He came from Nell Hills.
Isn't he cute?

I used my good-ole-I-use-them-everywhere-gas-station-numbers on top of the hutch. The 5 is always on top of the hutch. I just added the 2 for the season!

See the old paperbacks that were transformed into cute decorating accessories? Cheap, quick and easy.

The plaid boxes were part of a plaid gift-box set I picked up at Wal-Mart. I never put anything in them, I just use them for decorating. Then I flatten them out and pack them away for another year. Another cheap, easy and quick idea.

This cute little Santa is made from an old fence post. I bought him at a garden center in Topeka after Christmas in 1999. You wonder how I remember that? Well remember how we were warned about the many dangers that awaited us as the computers turned to 2000? I bought this guy on New Year's Eve in 1999. Schewwwwwwwwwwwwwww.....I got him just before NOTHING happened to all those computer systems!

I love the sentiment of the sign. ALWAYS welcome, I might add!!

This Santa is probably my very favorite of all. My Granddad Flanagan brought him to me when I was about 4 years old. He was driving through our town on business and he stopped and gave my brother and me each one of these. It is really a bank. ....And when he gave us the bank(s), inside each one was $25 worth of rolled dimes. I have no idea how I remember that, besides the fact I loved it so much then and love it even more now.

Many of the "old" tins and the Santa top (above) are really reproductions...and cheap. When clustered together they all tend to help each other out and look (somewhat) better!

More of my lovely plaid boxes. I think there were about 5 boxes in the package.

The Merry Christmas plate is from Nell Hills many years ago. It is part of an entire dish line I wish I owned! I am happy with one plate though. It shows up somewhere different each year.

#25 happened to be my basketball number from high school basketball back in the (very) Dark Ages. It always makes me happy to see #25 anything!

Too much?  Perhaps. But it is Christmas. It makes the entire family happy. It is only for a few weeks every year. We love Christmas time. It is even better this year with a new babies in the family. We firmly believe that Christmas is for giving....and for giving back..........Lessons that can be taught through Santa.

Thanks for stopping by and helping me to Santa-sit for a while!
